Summary

Everything Handmaids wear is red: the colour of blood, which defines us。

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, where women are prohibited from holding jobs, reading, and forming friendships。 She serves in the household of the Commander and his wife, and under the new social order she has only one purpose: once a month, she must lie on her back and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if they are fertile。 But Offred remembers the years before Gilead, when she was an independent woman who had a job, a family, and a name of her own。 Now, her memories and her will to survive are acts of rebellion。

Provocative, startling, prophetic, The Handmaid's Tale has long been a global phenomenon。 With this stunning graphic novel adaptation of Margaret Atwood's modern classic, beautifully realized by artist Renee Nault, the terrifying reality of Gilead has been brought to vivid life like never before。

“Each month I watch for blood , fearfully , for when it comes it means failure。”A very quick read。 I must say I really enjoyed it and thought the illustrations were great。 This has made me want to pick up the actual book and see if I would enjoy it just as much。

Nice graphic adaptation。 Worth the read。

Better than the original novel。

The most beautiful illustrations and color palette! I’ve made up my mind and prefer visual iterations of the Handmaid’s Tale over the novel。 TW: rape, violence

I thought this graphic novel was a great overview of the original novel。 The pictures were really well drawn and there were some details in this book I did not catch in the original。 To me, the Handmaid's Tale finally came together after reading this graphic novel。 I would definitely recommend reading this after reading the original! This is my first graphic novel and I completely loved it。

When I saw a copy of this graphic novel on the library shelf, I almost couldn’t believe it。 Like Muslimah authors’ works, The Handmaid’s Tale rarely spends long on the shelves。 I felt like I was snatching away something when I checked it out。 Now that I’ve finished reading, I’m going to return it asap。It’s been a few years since I’ve read the novel。 So, as far as I remember, I can say the graphic adaptation hits all the same plot beats。 Atwood’s words remain largely untouched。 Offred—or June, if When I saw a copy of this graphic novel on the library shelf, I almost couldn’t believe it。 Like Muslimah authors’ works, The Handmaid’s Tale rarely spends long on the shelves。 I felt like I was snatching away something when I checked it out。 Now that I’ve finished reading, I’m going to return it asap。It’s been a few years since I’ve read the novel。 So, as far as I remember, I can say the graphic adaptation hits all the same plot beats。 Atwood’s words remain largely untouched。 Offred—or June, if you’ve watched the Hulu adaptation—is still a Handmaid in the new totalitarian Republic of Gilead。 Created by the rich, white patriarchy, Gilead’s militaristic oligarchy launched to “solve” the fertility crisis。 Said crisis was brought on by the same rich, white men polluting the planet and hindering any attempts to control the spread of a super-form of syphilis。 It all sounds blood-freezing familiar, especially the part about the homegrown terrorists gunning down Congress and the President。 I first read The Handmaid’s Tale in 2015, and it’s a gut-punch how much closer we are to Gilead。Nault’s art is beautiful。 Her linework’s thin delicacy is complimented perfectly by the deep watercolors。 Reading the book, I hadn’t realized how colorful Atwood’s work was。 Or it’s one thing to read that a cloth is red as blood; another, to see it。 I noticed more how visually labeled the women are: June’s red, Serena Joy’s blue, Aunt Lydia’s muddy green。 Nault brushes the architecture a dull earthy gray, which forms as gasping contrast to June’s vibrant flashbacks。 I found myself noting hair a lot more—who is allowed to have it, how much of it, when is it shown。 Though a lot of the female characters wear similar form-hiding outfits, I could always tell who was who, which speaks to Nault’s sense of expression and shape。Overall, the graphic adaptation is as beautiful and heart-rending as the novel。 I’m wondering how much the United States will have changed by the time I get to watching the Hulu series or reading The Testaments。 。。。more

I forced myself to read this because I haven’t read the book or watched the show。 I knew I could get through the graphic novel much quicker。 In many ways it was worse than I expected, emotionally。 I gave it four stars because the story was well rendered。

Cannot recommend enough; whether you’ve read the book, seen the show, both, or neither it’s fantastic。The art is a moody and evocative character in and of itself。 It is what (having only seen stills and short snippets) I wish the show looked like。Words are used sparsely and increase the feeling of solitude and abandonment—no small feat when taken from a text-dense medium。 Atwood’s graphic novel/comics background and interest shines。

Handmaid's Tale used to be one of my favourite books but it's hard to read it now and not wonder, what the purpose of it is。 Everything that happens in the story has happened before, to other women, elsewhere (and in America), but it is now in this story happening to white women and this is the tragedy and that is the dystopia。 I never even noticed that race was absent from the scenario until I read some articles about it and realized that what this story is trying to say is not that these horri Handmaid's Tale used to be one of my favourite books but it's hard to read it now and not wonder, what the purpose of it is。 Everything that happens in the story has happened before, to other women, elsewhere (and in America), but it is now in this story happening to white women and this is the tragedy and that is the dystopia。 I never even noticed that race was absent from the scenario until I read some articles about it and realized that what this story is trying to say is not that these horrible things are being done to women but that these horrible things are being done to white women。 Everybody else has already experienced exactly the same things。 People of color are absent from this dystopia completely。 It is a white supremacist world。 Why are these words never uttered anywhere in the story when it is so blatant? Is this whole story just about appropriating experiences of people of color to arouse sympathy for white people?Anyway。 I don't know what to think anymore。 All I know is, I clearly have much to learn and perhaps Margaret Atwood isn't the literary hero I used to think she is。 。。。more

I actually enjoyed this graphic novel better than the original。

Just as amazing as the novel, as the tv show。 One of my favourite stories of all time。 The artwork is gorgeous。 Reads like poetry。

Katherine Lamb

A wonderful adaptation of the original novel。 The illustrations are dreamlike, nightmarish and haunting。

An amazing adaptation。 I think the original novel feels kind of incomplete, but this version captures the atmosphere perfectly, and the art is fantastic。 I might actually recommend reading this over the novel。

。。。more

A decent adaptation into graphic novel form that falls short of the novel it adapts。 That is not to take away from Renee Nault’s gorgeous art or impressive narrative condensation, but simply to highlight how inextricable Margaret Atwood’s brilliant prose is to this story。

I loved the novel and the TV series, and maybe little surprisingly, I also loved this graphic novel。 I liked the reduced color palette and style of the illustrations。The story was so dense that I read this in one sitting。

While reading this book I sat and wondered about the state of our nation and how easy/hard things could change to make something like this happen。 I did enjoy it and it makes you think。

I have read this in noe form before, but in this graphic novel state it's all the more disturbing。 The sparse words in a handwritten font with the ethereal artwork shows how quickly women can be taken from a place of humanity to one of an object。 I have read this in noe form before, but in this graphic novel state it's all the more disturbing。 The sparse words in a handwritten font with the ethereal artwork shows how quickly women can be taken from a place of humanity to one of an object。 。。。more

I’m probably the only person who picked this book up without reading the original。 But I’m somewhat glad I did, wanted to see if it was good enough on its own。 Unfortunately sometimes I was very confused and had no idea what was going on, the story feels quite flat。 I will read the original soon, I’m now even more motivated to do so, which is a plus, but its mostly because I want to get rid of the confusion。I did like the artwork

Is a must read for every woman, it made me feel sick and grateful for what we are able to do nowadays, I wish Offred would have fought more。
